A Heart-to-Heart Talk About Your Dream

Female Friends Enjoying Tea And Cookies At HomeOften, when I meet another mom for the first time and she finds out that I’m a work-at-home mom, I will usually get this comment, “How nice! I also hope to be a work-at-home mom (or “I hope to start an online business”) so that I can spend more time with my kids.”

During such times, I’m often tempted to ask, “Then why didn’t you?”

Since you are here, chances are you have a similar dream of being a mompreneur or a work-at-home mom too. Why are you hesitating? What’s really stopping you?

To find the answer, let’s go back to one fundamental: Do you really, truly desire to make your dream a reality?

Or put it in another way: Is that really your dream or is it just a wish?

Not too sure? Let’s see what a dream looks like.

A dream usually starts with an idea. As you give it more thought it will begin to grow on you and takes a grip over your heart. Sometimes, a dream may go away for a while (usually because of your own fears and self-doubts) but if it’s truly your dream, it WILL come back to you one day. You will think about it so often until it becomes a burning desire (it’s like falling madly in love with someone) and drives you to action.

And there lies the answer to our question about whether you have a dream or a wish.

If it’s a dream, you will take actions to achieve it.

It won’t be easy. Nor will your fears and doubts go away suddenly. The difference is that you are committed to achieving your dream. You will do it in spite of your fears and doubts.

So ask yourself do you have a dream or do you have a wish?

If you realise it’s actually a wish and not a dream, that’s not a problem. What you need to do now is to find your dream. You deserve to live a meaningful and abundant life.

Remember, this is YOUR dream, not someone else’s.

At this point, I want to say this: Working from home may be many moms’ dream but if it’s not yours, that’s fine. Your dream should be aligned with your values and passion.

After all, being a WAHM doesn’t mean being a better mom. So don’t feel guilty if that is not your dream as a mom. You don’t have to do what everyone else is doing! What matters is that you give of your best to your child, and there’s more than one way of expressing it.

But if becoming a WAHM or starting a business is really your dream (or whatever your dream may be for that matter), then don’t stand in its way.

Yes – we – you and I, should not stand in the way of our dreams.

Often, it’s not external circumstances that stop us from achieving our dreams. It is us – our doubts, fears, feelings of inadequacies that are the greatest obstacles.

I had been there before. It took me TWO YEARS (!!) from the day I said I wanted to be a freelance writer to getting my first article published. I attended writing classes, I spoke to people to find out how they got into freelance writing. I got ‘trained’ and found the answers I needed to launch my writing career.

Yet nothing happened. Simply because I thought I wasn’t good enough. I was paralysed by my fears and doubts. The breakthrough only came when I had a mental shift.

A friend who was doing freelance writing at that time (she’s now a published author whose book has made it to Singapore’s bestsellers list) told me a magazine is looking for people to contribute their personal story. I thought that was easy enough and it wasn’t a long piece, just about 500 words. Finally for once, I felt confident that I could do it. The moment I moved from a place of doubt to a place of belief, things changed. I submitted my story, got my first byline and as they say, the rest is history.

But imagined what would have happened if I wasn’t mired in self-doubt for so long!

If you have a dream, a deep desire in your heart that has been calling out to you for a long time, don’t ignore it further. Take a step of faith today.

Take a minute or two to think about what you can do to jump start the process. Share that with us in the comments below. Oh, do tell us your dreams too! (doing that can be the very first step towards achieving your dream)

“Consult not your fears but your hopes and your dreams.
Think not about your frustrations, but about your unfulfilled potential.
Concern yourself not with what you tried and failed in,
but with what it is still possible for you to do.”

~ Pope John XXIII

  1. Sometime ago, I attended a talk and came over this phrase “Over analysis is paralysis”. I can’t agree more. Very often, we tend to think too much about something even before we embark on it. Then it become so fearful that we drop the idea and return to our comfort zone. I also believe in being with the right circle of friends. People who are motivated, passionate, optimistic. Being with the right people definitely helps to put you in the right place too. Also telling yourself “You can” instead of “I can’t”.

My dream is to start an internet marketing business whereby I can make tonnes of money without slogging my life away. LOL … I believe time and freedom is precious and should be spent on the things we enjoy and people we love. Gotta work smarter. ^^ Had signed up for a seminar with my husband so I’m glad we are taking a big step forward. I am totally excited about the future.

I’m so happy for you that you are pursuing your passion. Thanks for this great article.

    • I agree with you, sometimes all we need is just to step out in faith and things will fall into place. But many of us got stuck by limiting beliefs and fears. I am so happy that you and your husband have taken the first step of faith towards your dreams! I wish you both success in your venture!

  2. Love this post, Ruth. I am a dreamer and a believer, but when it comes to my own dreams and actually working towards them, I find so often I allow my own rationality and fears to hold me back. I hesitate but am slowly taking small steps, dear friend, and I have to say my husband and close friends have been such an encouragement and motivating factor to me! :)

    • It’s so important to surround ourselves with people who believe in and are supportive of our dreams. I have total faith in you and God that you will get there, and I’ll be cheering you on!
