Thought of the Week: Business or Hobby?

Biz or hobbyI know many mompreneurs start out by turning a hobby into a business. But somewhere along the way, instead of thriving, these small businesses stagnated and some even die a premature death.

So what happened? I believe the cause is largely due to this – MINDSET.

If you want to be successful in your business, there needs to be a mindset shift. You must now see yourself as a business owner and treat your hobby like a real business. Doesn’t matter if it’s a small business, it’s still a business nonetheless (and big companies start out small anyway!).

You need discipline to work on it everyday. Not as and when you feel like it. As a hobby, you may be spending one, two hours a day on it. But as a business, you now need to commit a few hours each day, at least five days a week. Sounds like work? Yes, it is! Will you still enjoy it now that it’s work? That’s something you need to be honest with yourself about from the start.

Remember this: Your mindset or mentality will determine the results you get. Now what results do you want to achieve? Do you just want to earn some pocket money from your hobby or do you want to build a successful business that can support your family and even more?

Only you can decide for yourself. But if you truly desire to build a lucrative business, then make sure you have the right mindset that will empower you to achieve your business goals.

Dream big, have a vision, craft a plan and work towards it. You can get there.

  1. This post definitely speaks to me. I’ve been wanting to figure out a way to save money for education of my future child/children because our DFA doesn’t cover education of children abroad, which is horrendously more expensive than in the Philippines. I was hoping to do it with my blog, but honestly I’ve lacked the self confidence to turn it into a business. Right now my health is my priority, but I hope that when I get my self-together I am able to create a business like you. I really admire entrepreneurs! This blog is so inspiring!

  2. Hi Ruth,

It’s really nice to chance upon your page through mums@work. Really great to know that you are offering some free coaching for moms like myself, as a source of inspiration to us. :)

I’ve recently started my crafting hobby for little girls, mommies and anyone who love unique customized handmade accessories into a small online biz and it seems it’s really hard to push this little “hobby-biz” into something more realistic!

It would be great to know more on how to put an action plan to turn this dream hobby into a reality biz.

Thanking you in advanced and hope to hear from you soon!

    Cheers!
